Castor Canadensis: Arboreous
2008

durational performance
Banff Centre for the Arts

Castor Canadensis: Arboreous is the first of the Castor Canadensis series, and was carried out at the Banff Centre for the Arts in January 2008.  It took the form of a durational performance action centered around a forty foot tree near a public path through the woods. Over the course of several days I encased the tree in beaver pelts and then skinned it. Having begun with research at the Hudson Bay Company Archives in Winnipeg, the Castor Canadensis series continues my engagement with colonially embedded  identities, histories and nationhood in the lands now called Canada working from a critical and implicated white settler prespective.
